A PLAY IN A WEEK

A little bit about me, and the history of the "Play in a Week" Camp. I am Rosemary Doyle, the Artistic Director of Theatre Kingston and I have been an actor since I was 8 years old. In 2011 I opened the Red Sandcastle Theatre in Toronto and every summer there I ran the “PLAY IN A WEEK CAMP”. I invented this camp as I am also a playwright and I have a particular skill with writing plays quickly. Kids have grown up going to my camp, returning year after year. Last summer I had a group of bubbled parents insist that I do a camp for them, which I did and it worked out very well. I am really thrilled to be able to offer this program in Kingston, as I live here now and I miss being able to work with young actors in a “Troupe” environment.
A bit about the camp: On the first day of camp we learn about the history of theatre from the beginning of time until now in a fun and active way, we learn about the different styles of theatre, How to find our “ Light” and we learn the vocabulary of theatre so that we can rehearse effectively. Then in the afternoon we decide what type of play we want to do, who our characters will be, what the style will be, how we want the relationships to be and then we think about the set and begin to make the set. I take all of that input from the troupe and that night I go home and write a play for those campers. Then we spend the week preparing and on Friday we perform the play for you.
Normally I would have 10 kids be the maximum, but with covid I would like to keep it to 5 or 6 at the max. I will be practicing social distancing as most of my instruction can be given at a proper distance, but I expect our group to be a bubble for the most part during our time together. We will take frequent breaks to sanitize our hands, and we will be wearing our masks when we are in the hallways. Everyone will be encouraged to use there own scripts when rehearsing. As for cancellation policy of course if someone needs to cancel I will respect that and give them a refund for the time they didn’t use. The kids should also bring a snack. We do have a fridge and a microwave. The Juniper Cafe has Kids lunches which can be ordered ahead of time too.
This Camp works very well, and we will have a safe good time.

All the best,
Rosemary Doyle
