This summer I was privileged enough to spend my vacation playing a role in the Thousand Islands Playhouse production of Stephen Massicotte’s The Clockmaker. Directed beautifully by Kathryn MacKay and designed with stunning precision by Robin Fisher (both Kingstonians), the play resonated with audiences and drew praise from local and national critics alike. It had been three years since I had worked on a stage and I was struck … by how exhausting and emotionally draining it was. Nightly, I would pour over my notes, wracked with insecurity, disseminating the minutae of moments after each performance, constantly discussing potential ‘improvements’ with my scene partners. It was a great reminder of the cost an artist pays while in the act of creation.

It is very easy to dismiss professional artists as self-indulgents, suckling from the taxpayer’s teat through public funding programs at all levels of government. We’ve all been at parties where the actor in the room has monopolized the conversation with ‘hilarious’ tales from the stage. (I know that my friends and family have. ahem.) But, these people, working in a wide array of disciplines, go to work each day and dissect themselves – their heart, their history, their dreams – in order to study and illuminate the human condition. They do this so that the rest of us can know ourselves better. Without these people, these self-surgeons, I believe that life would be pretty meaningless for the rest of us.

This month, go to Writersfest and engage an author in a discussion about their process, or travel the gallery circuit for Art After Dark and talk to the artists about their work. I can promise you, much like a professional performance is not about ‘learning lines’, painting a piece of art is not just about paint and a brush. On that canvas lies painful memories, deepest desires, and hopes for the future. Celebrate these people, they are the protectors of our collective soul.
-Brett.

Breathe. (….) Now, LEAP!
This season, the Board of Directors of Theatre Kingston have made the courageous decision to triple the operating budget of the company in order for me to present a fully professional season of theatre in Kingston. They should receive a standing ovation for their guts and their vision. I consider myself very lucky to work with this insightful and enthusiastic group of people.

Now, comes the fun part – and that’s your job. Try us out. Buy a Pass, bring your friends, talk about the shows you’ve seen. If you are already a believer in great theatre, find someone who isn’t and make them one. This season has something for everyone in this community: music, comedy, danger, romance, and candy canes. If this company is going to create and sustain strong homegrown professional work here in Kingston, we’ll all need to play a role.

The future holds great promise: more opportunities, high-calibre youth training in all aspects of production, and a nationally-envied environment of collaboration between the people making plays in this city. This is the beginning of something very exciting and very big. I urge you to hop on board and enjoy the ride!

We’ll it’s been a wild and woolly six months of steep learning curve since I came on board with Theatre Kingston. But I’ve been lucky enough to connect with some incredible and dynamic people in this community, both artistic and otherwise. And the support that folks have shown has been truly touching and invigorating. So, now what? In the next month I will announce my first season of theatre offerings with the company and I think you will be pleased by the choices of plays and artists that will be joining us for the 2012-13 Season. It will be an incredible season of growth for the company, one that has been on the horizon for many years. Another big theme for next year will be collaboration within the theatre community. This city is full of theatre practitioners, young and old, student and veteran, amateur and professional – and all of them deserve an ecology of opportunity. Theatre Kingston will play a key role in connecting the disparate corners of the art form in the city, and foster a new era of community not competition. We want to create a hive of theatre activity where those who want to get involved will find a wealth of options. It’s going to be a great year. Stay tuned and start warming up!
