Theatre Kingston's mandate includes a strong commitment to education and outreach activities. In the past, we have conducted theatre workshops for all ages, as well as a special series of theatre workshops in some of Kingston's prisons. In the 2007-2008 Season, we continue our commitment to community involvement and education in theatre and the arts.

Children's Drama Club - New and Improved!

For years, Theatre Kingston - along with The Barefoot Players - has run a successful theatre camp for several weeks during the summer months. In the fall of 2007 this camp began to operate in an expanded format, culminating in 4 days of public performance in a theatre for friends parents and peers. More details are available by calling course leader Ashley Westlake at (613) 544-2021, but here are the salient points:

  • Students in Grades 4 - 8 are eligible to enroll
  • The Club began September 17 and runs to April at Calvin Park P.S. Dance Studio (very central & lots of parking!)
  • Classes are Mondays from 6:30 - 8:30
  • From September to December the focus is on theatre craft & technique, improv & drama games, voice work etc. From December to April the student will put what they have learned into practice by applying their new found skills to a scripted peice
  • The Club concludes with a fully staged public production - in a theatre with lights, costumes and a captive audience!
  • Parents are encouraged to be involved in different ways
  • The fee for September to April is $300

Mandate:

The purpose of The Theatre Kingston's Children's Drama Club is to provide an opportunity for young people to:

  • Enhance self-esteem, self-confidence and self-discipline
  • Improve their oral communication and performance skills
  • Develop social skills and the ability to work in a group
  • experience the rewards of perseverance and commitment to a task
  • foster their appreciation of the talents of others
  • HAVE FUN!!

The format of The Club is based on a highly successful program which Artistic Director Kim Renders ran for 9 years in Fergus On. The program had been in existence for over 20 years, and when Kim left that community to come to Kingston, the waiting list for acceptance was up to 60 students!

Registration is taking place now. Call (613) 544-2021, or email the company.
